Project Purley

Project Purley is Purley's local history society. It was founded in 1984 ‘To research and document the Parish of Purley on Thames in Berkshire’. It holds meetings on the third Friday of each month, except August with a wide variety of speakers. It takes as its definition of the parish both the civil and ecclesiastical parishes now and historically.

There are around 40 members, many of whom are actively researching an aspect of Purley's past. It publishes a quarterly newsletter and occasionally publishes a booklet. Members contribute occasional articles to the Purley Parish News.

It is a participating society within the Berkshire Local History Association and has close links with the Berkshire Family History Society and the Berkshire Record Society.

As well as publishing booklets and articles Project Purley is building a library of display panels which have been used for exhibitions over the years and is building an archive of documents and tape recordings. A systematic account of the parish is being worked on and there is an extensive photographic library.

The Golden Jubilee project is to capture a photographic image of every building in the parish.
