West Berkshire Council

West Berkshire Council is a unitary District Council serving the western part of the Royal County of Berkshire. There are six unitary authorities within Berkshire, West Berkshire, Reading, Wokingham, Bracknell Forest, Slough and Windsor & Maidenhead. In many service areas eg to run the Fire Service or Archives the six Councils cooperate and have joint arrangements with one Council taking the lead. West Berkshire also has other joint arrangements with Oxfordshire, Wiltshire and Hampshire County Councils and Swindon Unitary Authority.

Members of West Berkshire Council are local councillors elected every four years by voters within a given ward. At the moment there are three wards pertinent to our area:-

PURLEY ON THAMES WARD – covering the parishes of  Purley, Sulham and Tidmarsh with Councillors John Chapman and Margaret French – From May 2003 this will be increased to include the Denefield ward of the parish of Tilehurst

WESTWOOD WARD – covering northern parts of the Parish of Tilehurst – with Councillors Brian Dowding and Jean Gardner – From May 2003 this will be reduced to a single member ward with the western half moving into the Purley ward.

PANGBOURNE WARD – covering the parish of Pangbourne with Councillor Susie Kemp.

While councillors are always ready to listen to anyone’s problems and will try to advise if possible you must note that West Berkshire Council is NOT RESPONSIBLE for Police, Health, Social Security, Buses, Trains, public utilities (such as gas electricity, telephones etc) or any matters to do with central government.
