There are many organisations serving Purley to provide entertainment, sport, companionship or help. In the list below we provide a brief profile of their organisation. Qualifications are that the organisation is local but may cover several parishes (Berkshire-wide and District-wide bodies are not included)

 

All Churches Together

Provides a forum for all churches in Pangbourne and surrounding parishes to work together. Contact David Putley on 0118-984-2851

Allotments

The Parish Council operate the allotments off Winston Way. Contact John Chapman on 0118-942-6999

Angling Club

Fishing in the Thames for residents of Purley Park River Estate - contact Les Horsted at 31 Wintringham Way.

Arthritis and Rheumatism Council

Collects money to help pay for medical research. Contact Anne Rowell on 0118-984-3005

Barn Youth Club

A junior Youth Club for 9 to 14 year olds. We meet on Fridays at the Purley Barn between 7 and 9 pm.The programme, planned by the members, includes sports, handicrafts, issue work, trips out and of course time for members to meet and talk to their friends. Beavers

For children 6 to 8 - Colony suspended at the moment due to lack of leaders

Bell Ringers

There was a branch of the diocesan guild of bell ringers in the early part of the 20th century but it withered when the bells were no longer able to be pealed. Now revived under Bell Captain Simon Robertson with practices at the church on Friday evenings.

Brownies (First Purley)

Children's Society

Church (St Mary the Virgin)

Church of England is the only church located in the Parish. Services - Sunday 9.30 am Family Worship, 11.15 am Holy Communion (except Morning worship on 2nd Sunday of month) 6.00 pm Holy Communion 1st Sunday, Evening Worship 3rd Sunday. Sunday School  - contact Sara Sidorowicz on 0118-941-2045

Cricket Club

Runs two teams in the Berkshire League on Saturdays and two teams for friendlies on Sundays Also U11, U13 and U15 teams in the several Berkshire Colt's Leagues.- Matches played at Beech Road Recreation Ground in season.  They were Berkshire Champions in 1981/83/85/86/89 and 1990 Contact Martin Bishop 0118-984-1726 [click here or here }

Denefield School

The principal secondary school for Purley. A Technology College for the Community. As well as providing education for the 11-18 year olds it is also the venue for the Open University and Newbury College evening classes and the sports facilities are available for hire. There is also a creche and a playgroup. (0118-941-3458)

Football Clubs

Purley has two football clubs see  Purley FC  and Purley Jubilee FC.

Guides (First Purley)

Horticultural Society

Long Lane School

The Long Lane School Association raises money to provide extra facilities for the children as well as having a good time. Contact Chairman Robin Barrall via the school on 0118-942-7187

Neighbourhood Watch

There are many Neighbourhood Watches in Purley who look after each other's properties and help the police with crime prevention. For details contact the Pangbourne Police - ring 0118-953-6000 and ask for Pangbourne Station. Our 'beat bobbie', PC Sean Limebear will be only too anxious to help.

Pangbourne Choral Society

Pangbourne and District Volunteer Centre

Founded 1977 to provide for needs of elderly and disabled persons in the parishes surrounding Pangbourne. Now mainly provides car transport using volunteer drivers - For information ring 0118-984-4586 9.30 to 11.30 am Monday to Friday (not Tuesday temporarily).

Project Purley

Purley CE Infant School

The present school was built in 1870 but there was a school in Purley back in the late 1700s operating we believe from the old Rectory. For children 5-7 living north of the A329. Head teacher Mrs Jeanette Goddard tel 0118-984-2384.

Purley Football Club

The present Purley FC started in the 1960s as a Saturday team. Changed to play on Sundays in 1973. Now run two senior teams in the Reading and District Sunday Football League playing at the Beech Road Recreation Ground. Club colours: sky blue and claret. Secretary Geoff Druce te 0118-982-5321. Purley Jubilee Football Club

Founded in 1977 as a youth team it now runs two senior teams, a junior u13 team and caters also for U9s, U10s and U11s. Plays at the Beech Road Recreation Ground on Saturdays. Club colours: red, white and blue. Secretary Peter Stallard tel 01491-872118
